These are my original character designs for Demigods, a tabletop role-playing game. They were based on / inspired by Philippine folklore and mythology. These illustrations were featured in the game rulebook.
Demigods is a successful Kickstarter project conceptualized and spearheaded by Jason Mills.
SIDAPA is a powerful God of Fate & Destiny. He is tall & muscular with golden horns. In some stories, he has ten horns that intertwine to form a golden crown. He appears with a swarm of black butterflies, crows, or bats.
His resting place is upon the tallest mountain, where he sits under a Tree of Life and Death. He marks the length of each mortal life with notches on the tree. Adding or taking away notches can extend or cut short a mortal life.
MAGUAYAN is the Goddess of the Ocean who is nurturing, as she provides food for mortals, but is also tempestuous, creating tsunamis, whirlpools, floods and heavy rains when angered.
MAGUAYAN's territory flows out into the Underworld, making her one of the few gods who can enter/leave the abode of the dead.
Upon the death of her daughter "Lidagat", she evolved into the Goddess of the Underworld. Ferrying souls to the underworld allows her the chance to see "Lidagat". In effect, she is rarely unhappy when a death happens.
DALIKAMATA is a many-eyed clairvoyant goddess. She appears as a beautiful woman with eyes all over her body, each eye possesses the ability to see far and wide: the past, present, and future; the tangible and the invisible. She uses butterflies to communicate with mortals in their dreams.
This interpretation has her eyes disguised as patterns in butterfly wings. They can break away and transform into butterflies at her disposal.
SARAGNAYAN, son of primordial chaos, commands the darkness and the forces of evil. He lives in the Land of Eternal Darkness with his fairy wife, whom he is fiercely loyal to.
To his wife, he is kind & gentle, and appears as a man with warrior tattoos. To the rest of the world, however, he transforms into a terrifying monster: he sheds his hair; his eyes glow red & boar tusks protrude from his mouth. His tattoos expand to cover his entire body, making his skin ink black!
ENCANTOS are generally malevolent fairies with pale skin that sparkles under sunlight. They tower over humans, have light colored hair, and leaf-shaped ears. They grow long sharp teeth when threatened.
ENCANTOS live in large trees that grow close to the sea or any body of water. It is customary for fishermen to offer meat and other delicacies for ENCANTOS by throwing them into the sea, after a day's bountiful catch.
The artwork depicts the ENCANTO dressed in a fine silken shirt woven from enchanted fibers. According to legend, this mystical garment grants its wearer the power of invisibility.
